The Royal Show (May - June)

The Royal Show is one of the longest running events in South Africa. It begun in 1851 there is lots for the visitors to see- the show has around 359 trade stands in 13 different exhibition stalls. These focus on traditional aspects of local life and culture of the region. For example, it runs a livestock and animal competitions. However, the main showcases are the arts and craft stalls, showing all manner of talented artisans and their works.

Changing of the Guard (June - August)

The British Royal Family are one rather large tourist draw to London, with Buckingham Palace open to the public and various marks of the Royals spread over the capital. That they are still fully functioning and of constitutional importance no doubt adds to the mystique and allure for tourists.

Il Palio

Il Palio is one of Italy's great spectacles. The horse race, performed twice a year, is between teams of riders from different districts- or "contrade"- of Siena in Tuscany. The race arouses fierce loyalties and passions amongst the Sienese.

Bastille Day - 14 June

What does 'France' mean? "Liberte, Egalite and Fraternite", non? Whatever it may be, modern France was founded upon events which centred mostly on Paris in 1789 and have been celebrated on July 14th annually since then. For it is the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille - an oppressive, fortress prison in the eastern reaches of the city- and of the final act of a country freeing itself from monarchic rule and the foundation of a new republic.

Boi Bumba - 24 June

Possibly one of the most remote festivals on the planet, Boi Bamba takes place hundreds of miles deep into the Amazon rainforest. Surrounded on all sides by inhospitable terrain, once you arrive at the town of Parintins for the three day festival you are bound up with the event until it finishes- there are no local towns to go and visit, or cities to explore. The remote location, though, gives this particular festival a community feel as the thousands of party goers become familiar with each other as the festival wears on.
