The Royal Show (May - June)

The Royal Show is one of the longest running events in South Africa. It begun in 1851 there is lots for the visitors to see- the show has around 359 trade stands in 13 different exhibition stalls. These focus on traditional aspects of local life and culture of the region. For example, it runs a livestock and animal competitions. Bastille Day - 14 June

What does 'France' mean? "Liberte, Egalite and Fraternite", non? Whatever it may be, modern France was founded upon events which centred mostly on Paris in 1789 and have been celebrated on July 14th annually since then. For it is the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille - an oppressive, fortress prison in the eastern reaches of the city- and of the final act of a country freeing itself from monarchic rule and the foundation of a new republic.

Boi Bumba - 24 June

Possibly one of the most remote festivals on the planet, Boi Bamba takes place hundreds of miles deep into the Amazon rainforest. Surrounded on all sides by inhospitable terrain, once you arrive at the town of Parintins for the three day festival you are bound up with the event until it finishes- there are no local towns to go and visit, or cities to explore.
