The Adelaide Festival of Arts

The Adelaide Festival of Arts has grown to be the finest exhibition of its kind in Australia. Managing to straddle high brow interests with a more popular mix of entertainment- think Edinburgh Festival (upon which it was based)- Adelaide, so often usurped by its larger regional rivals Melbourne and Sydney, has managed to carve out a niche for itself.

Japanese Cherry Blossom Viewing.

The cherry tree is Japan's official tree. Their various (some very rare) varieties exist across the country and each spring produce delicate blossoms which linger on the trees just long enough to create a beautiful effect of light colours- from whites to pinks- which can almost overwhelm parks and gardens across the country- creating a magical, and lasting effect.

The Sand Marathon

For the truly dedicated and possibly slightly mad, the one race that tests the stamina and desire of top athletes like no other is the annual Sand Marathon in Morocco.

On paper it looks fairly straightforward: 700 competitors, 7 days and 150 miles to compete. However, add to that searing heat, only 9 litres of water a day, backpacks containing everything carried the whole journey, and the sheer magnitude of the event becomes clear. In one week of desert conditions, runners will suffer from extreme exhaustion and severe physical difficulties- blisters being one.

Perhaps not the greatest spectator sport, this is an event for the absolute enthusiast. One of the highlights of the extreme sports calendar

St Patrick's Day Parade

Strange really, that the world's largest St Patrick's day parade is not held in Ireland. Not Dublin; not Cork; not Kilkenny. No, in fact, the world's largest day celebrating Irishdom is held way across the Atlantic from Ireland, and in New York.
